About

CROP farm was the first farm in Bulgairia to take in WWOOF volunteers. In 2004 WWOOF Bulgaria was established by Dr Ian Sanders who created the project, water system and very productive gardens with a good lowtech irrigation system.

Both Ian and his wife Cat have many years experiance and education in farming and they have established a beautiful organic, permacultural farm. After 7 years of working hard and setting up the water system and gardens both Ian and Cat are having a break from the farm to allow a chance for others to experience looking after the farm. I am a good friend of theirs and while they are away I am enjoying the experience of taking care of the farm.

The farm is 2km up the mountain from the nearest town. Tserovo's population is 2,000. with a great connection to Sofia, 10 trains per day. There is also a school (primary and kindergarten), cafes, bars retraunts and library.

The farm is accessible by foot from Tserovo, come with light bags because The walk up the mountain can be hard.

Regarding what we do at the farm:
We live peacefully, maintain the water system, keep the garderns, housekeeping, cleaning and cooking. We did have goats before but we only have a donkey, chickens, a dog and 2 cats now. We care for the animals and maintain the gardens. We have a very large plum, strawberry, cherry season at the farm so making preserves is a big part of life at the farm. Also we have wood burning stoves and we need a good wood stock. Helping to maintain the wood stock is an ongoing job. We have forest land which we manage and this helps to supply our wood.

This year I am helping with the repairs on two big jobs.

1. We are upgrading and improving one of the oldest buildings at the farm. The old animal roof is being replaced before the roof falls down.

2. Repairs and upgrade to the old mountian spring on the farm land. We have a good, fresh clean water system from the mains connection but for sustainablity we would like the farm to have an independant water supply. If this water supply can be sorted and maintained well it will help to supply water to our neighbouring farms.

These jobs take materials and profesional care and one of the main reasons why Ian and Cat are away, they are working to earn the funds needed for these projects.

We are hiring local profesional people for some of the project work, but volunteers can help as well.

Also, we want to develop the farm as a mountain social centre and mountain hut. We can offer Bulgarian language courses at present to any travelers who would like to learn how to talk, read and write Bulgarian.

Myself (Misho) and a couple of friends (Mila and Anton) are helping to take care of the farm. When you come to help us you may meet all of us or one of us depending on our time. We're are new to farming and to this lifestyle but we are enjoying learning as we go. If you are interested in learning with us come and help with a small garden plot of your own. We would also like to learn any skills from you that you would like to teach us. After all WWOOFing is about sharing.

Accommodation - volunteers have a bedroom in a beautiful traditional farm house. The room has 2 comfortable bunk beds and room for your bags. There is a great hot shower bathroom next door and next to this a lovely kitchen dinning room. Unless we have more than 2-3 people staying at the farm, you would have the bedroom to yourself. Food is provided, and we can accommodate people with vegetarian/vegan or omnivorous diet, in return for your bed and food you will be expected to give 4 hours help at the farm and help with cooking and washing dishes. There's an outside compost toilet, a great hot shower. We have a washing machine but we do have a small charge of 4lv to cover the cost of using this. We have wifi internet at the farm and we do hope donations will be given to cover the cost for this service. There's a house rule not to use too much detergents and shampoos containing aggressive chemicals, as the waste water goes into the gardens. The place is not easily accessible by car, and is an hours walk to the nearest village, which is something to keep in mind if you have any medical condition or any trouble with walking. On the other hand, being up in the hills, it's a good place to relax and re-connect with nature. The air is pure and the water is sweet :)
