CROP farm was the first farm in Bulgairia to take in WWOOF volunteers. In 2004 WWOOF Bulgaria was established by the founders of CROP Farm. One of the founders Dr Ian Sanders helped created the farms, water system and very productive gardens with a good lowtech irrigation system.
Both Ian and his wife Cat have many years experiance and education in farming and they have established a beautiful organic, permacultural farm. After 7 years of working hard and setting up the systems and gardens both Ian and Cat are having a break from farming to develope their skills in teaching and to allow a chance for others to experience looking after the farm. I am a good friend of theirs and while they are away I am enjoying the experience of taking care of the farm. My name is Daniel.
The farm is 2km up the mountain from the nearest town. Tserovo's population is 2,000. with a great connection to Sofia, 10 trains per day. There is also a school (primary and kindergarten), cafes, bars retraunts and library in Tserovo.
The farm is accessible by foot from Tserovo, come with light bags because The walk up the mountain can be hard.
Regarding what we do at the farm:
We live peacefully, maintain the water system, keep the garderns, housekeeping, cleaning and cooking. We did have goats before but for now we have a donkey, chickens, a dog and 2 cats. We care for the animals and maintain the gardens. We have a very large plum and soft fruit season at the farm so making preserves is a big part of life at the farm. Also we have wood burning stoves and need a good wood stock of dead hard wood and soft wood. Helping to maintain the wood stock is an ongoing job. We have forest land which we manage and this helps to supply our wood.
Some periods in the year we do not have enough work for the amount of enquiries we get so we do offer guests to come and enjoy the beauty. If you would like to come as a guest the cost is very reasonible for a shared room (10lv per night) You can provide your own food and use the kitchen provided but please clean up after use. Or we can provide 3 meals per day for 10lv per day.
We also have a beautiful Vardo Wagon for guests to sleep in. This is a fully restored 100 year old gypsy wagon. Double bed, wood burning stove and a salon area, small but clean and beautiful. The cost for this accommodation for guests is 20lv per night. But is you are a long term volunteer with good skills we offer this accommodation to you. (minimum stay for long term volunteer is 2 months)
Myself (Daniel) and a couple of friends (Leonid and Lizz) are helping to take care of the farm. When you come to help us you may meet all of us or one of us depending on our time. We're are new to farming and to this lifestyle but we are enjoying learning as we go. If you are interested in learning with us come and help with a small garden plot of your own. We would also like to learn any skills from you that you would like to teach us. After all WWOOFing is about sharing.
Accommodation - volunteers have a bedroom in a beautiful traditional farm house. The room has 2 comfortable bunk beds and room for your bags. There is a great hot shower bathroom next door and next to this a lovely kitchen dinning room. Unless we have more than 2-3 people staying at the farm, you would have the bedroom to yourself. Food is provided, and we can accommodate people with vegetarian/vegan or omnivorous diet, in return for your bed and food you will be expected to give 4 hours help at the farm and help with cooking and washing dishes. There's an outside compost toilet, a great in door hot shower. We have a washing machine but we do have a small charge of 4lv to cover the cost of using this. We have wifi internet at the farm and we do hope donations will be given to cover the cost for this service. There's a house rule not to use too much detergents and shampoos containing aggressive chemicals, as the waste water goes into the gardens.
The place is not easily accessible by car, and is an hours walk to the nearest village, which is something to keep in mind if you have any medical condition or any trouble with walking. On the other hand, being up in the hills, it's a good place to relax and re-connect with nature. The air is pure and the water is pure and sweet :) Enjoy the peace :)
