About

About Us
We are a youngish Thai/Anglo couple based in a small village close to the ancient capital of Bulgaria; Veliko Tarnovo.
I am British and my wife is Thai. We are both chefs and passionate about food so you are guaranteed to eat well during your stay with us! We are creative, free-spirited, open-minded people and especially welcome any visitors with artistic ambitions.
I am an author and currently working on a number of fiction and non-fiction projects. I am a keen builder and especially enjoy working with wood and stone, both of which abound in our house. I enjoy cooking Mediterranean food.
My wife teaches Thai food cookery and delights in making our house comfortable and beautiful. She has a talent for interior decoration and loves gardening.
About Our Place
We have a smallholding of 2,000m² with an old farmhouse and two large barns which we are in the process of restoring using as much natural and recycled materials as possible. We moved to Bulgaria in mid 2014 when we cleared the land and house and worked on roofing. There is still a lot of work to be done on the buildings which we want to restore sympathetically. Our village is very quiet but has a decent population of about 500. It has a Post Office, library, shop/bar, town hall and very little traffic!
About Our Area
We are a thirty minute drive from Veliko Tarnovo (VT for short) which is a vibrant, fun city with a large university and hence plenty of young people and bars, restaurants, music venues, theatre and so on. We usually go into VT at least once a week if only because there is a great restaurant there that has fantastic fresh food and a marvelous daily food market with locally grown produce.
Our nearest town is Pavlikeni about fifteen minutes away which has shops, bars, restaurants and another market every Tuesday.
Our Plans
Our plan is to become self sufficient in vegetables and fruit. We also hope to start making our own cheese, skin care products and maybe a little wine! We use no chemicals on our land and eat as naturally as possible but we are not obsessive or fanatical. We don’t smoke and only drink moderately but we don’t judge others habits – just no smoking indoors!!
Work and Play
We ask that you help us for six hours a day generally Monday to Friday and we all have weekends off. We work hard on our project but like to keep a balance. You are welcome to join us on outings to places of natural beauty and other cities or just shopping! We are looking for physically fit volunteers who are not afraid to get their hands dirty and are willing to try those dirty hands at a variety of tasks. Work will include gardening and construction. We are starting from scratch and need to restore our old farmhouse and create vegetable, herb and fruit gardens. Accommodation will be either in our house if the weather is warm (basic and no heating system yet) or in the local house we are renting whilst work progresses. You are guaranteed to eat very well as we are both chefs and if you want to learn to cook Thai food some the evenings you can help Beau with evening meals.
We are omnivores but eat a lot of veggies and salad. We are happy to cater for veggies, vegans and coeliacs – just let us know in advance!
