About

About Us
We are a youngish Thai/Anglo couple based in a small village close to the ancient capital of Bulgaria; Veliko Tarnovo.
I am British and my wife is Thai. We are both chefs and passionate about food so you are guaranteed to eat well during your stay with us! We are creative, free-spirited, open-minded people and especially welcome any visitors with artistic ambitions.
We could use volunteers who are strong and ideally with some experience of construction.
I am a nutritional therapist and author of no repute and currently working on a number of fiction and non-fiction projects. I am a keen builder and especially enjoy working with wood and stone, both of which abound in our house. I enjoy cooking Mediterranean food. I have traveled in around 25 countries, lived in 10 or so and brought back recipes from every one of them!
My wife teaches Thai food cookery and delights in making our house comfortable and beautiful. She has a talent for interior decoration and loves gardening.
MaKroBia
Check us out at makrobia.com
This year we launch MaKroBia - a gourmet healthy eating retreat aimed at guests who want to improve or maintain their health through nutrition. There will be a strong emphasis on providing breaks for people with food allergies such as wheat protein intolerance as well as vegetarians and vegans. We will provide a range of accomodation including EcoRooms with low environmental impact and we are, this year, building an EcoBathroom with waterless toilet, well water shower, solar lighting and carbon neutral water heating.
About Our Place
We have a smallholding of 2,000m² with an old farmhouse which we finished restoring in 2016 with the help of more than 30 volunteers over 2 years. We have two large barns which we are in the process of restoring using as much natural and recycled materials as possible. . These will become part of the living accomodation for MaKroBia. We have grown veggies in our garden for a number of years and hope to grow most of what we need for MaKroBia.
About Our Area
Our village is very quiet but has a decent population of about 500. It has a Post Office, library, shop/bar, town hall and very little traffic! We are a forty minute drive from Veliko Tarnovo (VT for short) which is a vibrant, fun city with a large university and hence plenty of young people and bars, restaurants, music venues, theatre and so on. We usually go into VT once a week if only because there is a great restaurant there that has fantastic fresh food and a marvelous daily food market with locally grown produce.
Our nearest town is Pavlikeni about fifteen minutes away which has shops, bars, restaurants and another market every Tuesday.
Please note rural Bulgaria is very quiet - if you are looking for night life of any description this is not the place for you! We only visit a larger town once or twice a week. We have wi-fi in the house. Marc is a movie buff and has around 5,000 movies and we have a small library of books including lots of recipe books - so plenty to keep you busy if you tire of listening to nightingales or walks in nature.
Having said that if you fancy a night in VT there are very cheap hostels/hotels. We can probably drop you off there on a Saturday and a taxi back will cost about 30 leva.
Getting Here
We can collect volunteers from Pavlikeni (there is a train station here). If necessary we will collect you from VT but as the round trip is about 1.5hrs Pavlikeni would be better!
Our Plans
Our plan is to develop MaKroBia as an educational and sustainable business which will provide us with income and benefit our neighbours and villagers. We make a lot of our own food products like pickles, jams and preserves - we also hope, eventually, to start making our own cheese, bacon and skin care products. We use no chemicals on our land and eat as naturally as possible but we are not obsessive or fanatical. We don’t smoke and only drink moderately but we don’t judge other's habits – just no smoking indoors!!
