A narrow and winding road climbs towards the village passing though it until it suddenly ends. There are only a few gardens and prairies after that followed by an endless succession of hills as if they were giant ocean waves of a wooded sea. Contemplating this grandiose performance offered by nature, one couldn’t stop its imagination from thriving. The thoughts go easily to the mount of Kom emerging on top of the waves as the spiritual and protecting beacon it was once for the Thracians, many, many centuries ago. You might sometimes hear about a magnetic current crossing the countryside that brings its tremendous energy and pours it to all living things. People here often speak about bears and wolves hidden somewhere over there, as they like to say, on the other side of the hills. And in this slightly mysterious atmosphere you might still hear the Bulgarian voice and the magical enchantment of the gaida that accompanies it.

At this place, a 1050 m above the sea, you can drop your suitcases for a while and dive into its stimulating and reviving nature and furthermore, into a community of around 40 people living in this Pomak village situated in the heart of the Rhodope mountains. The village people are very welcoming and have an innate sense of hospitality.

I am French, in my fifties. I found myself here by the hazards of life: Love and Adventure. Step by step, for a few years now, I’ve been developing two activities, which if not imagined since the beginning, have become in the most natural way, an inseparable part of my life here. The first one is building the extension to the house and its renovation in order to accommodate 7/8 people. The second one is an agricultural activity oriented towards two traditional local cultures, indispensable to survive during the winter in the mountains: potatoes and beans (Smilyan’s beans are referenced by the Slowfood organization). Of course I couldn’t limit myself only to those species and planted others to diversify my dishes, to experiment and to discover, for the joy of seeing them grow, to embellish my garden, and moreover, to ensure the protection of the soil … Permaculture and agroecology combined form the humus that nourishes my gardener’s soul.

When it comes to Wwoofing, you will at least be offered the following:

Accommodation: the beds are comfortable and as here in the summer, the nights are fresh you will sleep like a baby!

Join my table: the ingredients come almost exclusively from my garden or from the village people like milk and yoghourt (why not make some cheese together? I will show you how!). We can cook outside on the plancha or in the solar oven. The view from my barbecue-house is splendid! I am also proud to announce I am equipped with the best juice extractor ever! The juice feels like health pouring through your body!

The shower and the laundry machine are at your disposal.

In return, I would ask for your help in the garden or elsewhere depending on present task I am working on without any restrictions. You might have knowledge or skills to share or to offer not only to me or to my own projects and activities but also to the village. For example, if you are a physiotherapist you could help by relieving somebody’s back pain or sciatic nerve pain etc. I am pretty sure the person will prepare a good meal for the whole house in exchange. There is so much to be invented here.

To better understand what I meant by helping the village, I will tell you a little bit about my life here. One day during last autumn the wind was so strong it blew off many tiles and I had to intervene on a dozen roofs to make small repairs. The question of payment has never been on the table because I refuse categorically any mention of it. However, what people did was great; somebody invites me over diner, the other day somebody else does; I was given handmaid woollen socks for the winter and other nice food stuff; but mostly, people begged me not to hesitate to ask for their help when I needed it!

I have some projects, which aren’t of capital importance but that I hold dear. For example, there is an old water spring very close to my house, completely forgotten for 50 years that would need a “team” to bring it back to life. I am also thinking about the construction of a manual garden shredder (crusher). I have so many projects in mind!

At last but not at least, of course, your presence here will be the opportunity to exchange knowledge and opinions and to have fun! I have lived for many years from my music (as a bass player), I have done a variety of jobs (post officer, technician in a lab, projectionist…). I have a degree and 10 years-experience as a carpenter and I am a passionate and self-educated agroecologist and permacultivator.
The village and I are looking forward to welcome you!
Raphaël
